ISLAMABAD, October 27, 2026 — Pakistan’s economic outlook and political environment remain closely connected as the government works to contain inflation, strengthen public finances and sustain reforms. Recent interest-rate decisions and an International Monetary Fund review have renewed attention on recovery, household costs and policy implementation.

The State Bank of Pakistan raised its policy rate by 50 basis points to 12 percent on October 26, effective October 27, according to Dawn. The Monetary Policy Committee cited a worsening inflation outlook linked partly to elevated energy prices and geopolitical tensions. Higher rates can curb inflationary pressure but increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. <Cite refs={[“turn837116search10”]}/>

Pakistan continues work under its IMF-supported programme. On October 7, IMF staff announced a staff-level agreement with authorities on the fourth review of the 37-month Extended Fund Facility and the third review of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. The agreement requires approval by the IMF Executive Board. <Cite refs={[“turn837116search0”]}/>

If approved, the reviews would provide Pakistan with about $1 billion under the Extended Fund Facility and around $210 million under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. The IMF said the arrangements would bring total disbursements under the programmes to approximately $5.7 billion. The funds are intended to support stability and reforms, but approval is not final until the board makes its decision. <Cite refs={[“turn837116search0”]}/>

    Economic pressures remain significant

The IMF reported that Pakistan’s real gross domestic product grew by 4 percent during the first three quarters of fiscal year 2026 and estimated full-year growth at 3.6 percent. Headline inflation eased to about 10.3 percent in September after peaking in May. The current account was broadly balanced in fiscal 2026, supported by remittances, and foreign exchange reserves increased by the end of September. <Cite refs={[“turn837116search0”]}/>

These indicators suggest improvement, but longer-term challenges remain. Debt-servicing costs, a narrow tax base, energy inefficiencies and limited room for public spending constrain policy. Businesses need predictable regulations, affordable financing and reliable energy to invest and create jobs.

The IMF has called for stronger revenue administration, a fairer tax system, better public-spending management and reforms to state-owned enterprises. It has also emphasised energy efficiency and measures to encourage investment and exports. These changes can be difficult when households face pressure from utility bills, food prices and employment concerns. <Cite refs={[“turn837116search0”]}/>

    Political developments and public expectations

Political debate matters because economic reforms depend on legislation, administrative decisions and public confidence. Disagreements among parties and demands for relief can influence policy, although individual political claims require separate verification. Transparent decision-making can help businesses assess risks and households understand policy changes.

Higher interest rates may make loans more expensive for small businesses and homebuyers, while inflation can reduce the purchasing power of wages. Delaying corrective measures, however, can add pressure to prices, the exchange rate and public finances. Policymakers must balance stability with support for vulnerable groups.

The IMF has highlighted targeted assistance and commitments to increase health and education spending. Results will depend on implementation, accurate identification of eligible households and adequate funding. <Cite refs={[“turn837116search0”]}/>

    What to watch next

Key indicators include the IMF Executive Board’s decision, inflation, foreign exchange reserves, tax collection and the effects of the new policy rate. Global energy prices and regional security also matter because Pakistan relies on imported fuel and remains exposed to external shocks.

Pakistan’s central challenge is to turn stabilisation into durable improvements in living standards. This requires credible fiscal management, productivity, investment and job creation, alongside transparent political decision-making. Recent figures show progress in some indicators, but sustained recovery will depend on consistent reforms and benefits reaching households and businesses nationwide in the months ahead.
