ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will lead Pakistan’s delegation to the high-level segment of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York next week, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, along with other federal ministers and senior government officials, will accompany the prime minister during the visit.

According to Foreign Office Spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to present Pakistan’s position on key regional and international developments during his address to the UN General Assembly.

The prime minister will highlight Pakistan’s emphasis on dialogue, diplomacy, restraint and the peaceful resolution of disputes, while outlining the country’s priorities on major global challenges.

Pakistan to Raise Kashmir and Palestine Issues at UNGA

The situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine will remain among the issues Pakistan intends to raise at the international forum.

The prime minister is also expected to discuss the humanitarian and political situation in Palestine as part of Pakistan’s broader position on regional peace and international security.

Climate Change, Terrorism and Islamophobia on Agenda

Pakistan will also highlight several global issues, including climate change, counterterrorism, Islamophobia, sustainable development and global economic challenges.

According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan will also put forward its perspective on reforming the United Nations and addressing challenges confronting countries of the Global South.

The prime minister’s participation will provide an opportunity for Pakistan to engage with other UN member states on regional and international matters and reaffirm Islamabad’s stated commitment to multilateral diplomacy and the UN Charter.

PM Shehbaz Expected to Hold Bilateral Meetings

During his stay in New York, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to participate in high-level events and hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and senior United Nations officials.

The meetings are expected to cover matters of mutual interest, regional developments and international cooperation, according to the Foreign Office.

Pakistan’s participation comes as the 81st UN General Assembly prepares to convene under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The general debate is scheduled for September 22–26, with a final sitting on September 28.
